Planned Parenthood: From Eugenics to Safe Sex Mapping

May 28, 2012 | written by

New high tech condoms are being passed out for free by Planned Parenthood. These condoms have a quick response code on the wrapper. You can scan the code with your phone to share the location of your “activity.” This is recorded on an online Planned Parenthood map called “Where Did You Wear It?”[1] Through Federal funding for Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) our tax dollars are paying for safe sex mapping. Our nation is in economic crisis. Responsible citizens and legislators are evaluating where to invest taxpayer dollars and where to cut spending.

This article summarizes where PPFA came from, what it currently provides, controversial issues related to PPFA, and economic and political implications of PPFA.

HOW DID PLANNED PARENTHOOD GET STARTED?

Margaret Sanger founded Planned Parenthood in 1916. She “was a devout racist who formed the Negro Project designed to sterilize unknowing black women and others she deemed as undesirables of society.”[2] The objective of the “Negro Project” according to the National Black Pro-Life-Union was to “infiltrate the black community by presenting birth control as a health option for women to kill off the black race… by limiting the growth of the [black] population by abortion and sterilization.”[3] Sanger is also quoted as saying “Colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated.”[4]

Sanger’s Progressive agenda when she formed PPFA was to shape and control society to create a superior race. In her autobiography, Sanger, a Eugenics activist, wrote that the purpose of Planned Parenthood was to “stop the multiplication of the unfit.” This, she boasted, would be “the most important and greatest step towards race betterment.”[5] Sanger conspired with a eugenics financier to hire “colored” ministers with social-service backgrounds in order to sell their genocidal policies as community health and welfare services.[6]

The American Eugenics movement started in the early twentieth century and was considered a new science. The goal of Eugenics is to create a superior race of people and eliminate the “unfit.” Originally, families believed it was a way to maximize certain genetic traits and minimize others. Ultimately, Eugenics took a negative turn and was used to weed out perceived undesirable people.[7] Eugenics is also anti “race-mixing.”[8]

Between 1900 and the 1970’s, the Eugenics movement in America led to the government sterilizing approximately 65,000 men and women.[9] The people sterilized were deemed by the government to be homosexuals, mentally unfit, promiscuous or generally unfit.[10]

In 1914, Harry Laughlin at the Eugenics Record Office proposed to authorize sterilization of the “socially inadequate” who were institutionalized.[11] These inhumane institutions remained in operation until the late 70’s. I personally toured one in the 70’s. It was grim.

The disturbing facts of the roots of Eugenics and Margaret Sanger’s beliefs laid the foundation for PPFA. Since 1926, PPFA has evolved into an organization that has significantly impacted our Federal budget and culture.

WHAT IS PLANNED PARENTHOOD TODAY

PPFA is the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate. Planned Parenthood serves men, women and teens, and has 800 health centers throughout the nation. PPFA offers sexual, reproductive, contraceptive, STD prevention, sexual health and pregnancy prevention education, as well as in-clinic abortions and abortion referral services.[12]

CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES

Americans United for Life documents the known and alleged abuses by Planned Parenthood, including:

* Misuse of federal care and family planning funds. State audit reports and admissions by former employees detail a pattern of misuse by some Planned Parenthood affiliates.

* Failure to report criminal child sexual abuse. Substantial evidence indicates many PPFA clinics fail to report all instances of suspected abuse, and instead advise minors and their abusers on how to circumvent the mandatory reporting laws.

* Failure to comply with parental involvement laws. Some PPFA affiliates exhibit a pattern and practice of violating and circumventing parental involvement laws.

* Assisting those engaged in prostitution and/or sex trafficking. Some PPFA clinics have demonstrated a willingness to partner with pimps or sex traffickers to exploit young women instead of safeguarding their health and safety.

* Dangerous misuse of the abortion drug RU-486. Planned Parenthood’s admitted disregard for FDA’s approved protocol puts profits above women’s lives and safety.

* Misinformation about so-called “emergency contraception,” including ella. Planned Parenthood boasts of its role in the approval of a new drug called ella, yet provides considerable misinformation about the drug.

* Willingness to refer to substandard clinics. This puts the lives and health of women and girls at risk.[13]

In 2011, one of Planned Parenthood’s clinic managers was caught on film “advising a purported sex trafficker about care for underage prostitutes.”[14] A complaint was filed in October of 2011 by a former Planned Parenthood employee who alleges Planned Parenthood falsifies patient records, bills the government for unwarranted services and services not covered by Medicaid, tacks on services patients did not receive, and instructed her to maximize billing revenue when the government was footing the bill.[15]

President Obama, on April 6, 2012, falsely claimed that Planned Parenthood provides mammograms which millions of women rely on. Steven Ertelt, of Life News, states that Planned Parenthood itself admits it does not perform mammograms. The organization Live Action released videotaped footage of calls to 30 PPFA centers. Without exception all 30 centers interviewed tell women to go elsewhere for mammograms. Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood director in Texas, stated regarding falsifying mammogram availability, “this is just one of the lies that Planned Parenthood uses to draw people into their clinics.”[16]

Black advocacy groups such as The National Black Pro-Life Union[17] and Black Genocide[18] speculate that racism is still an underpinning of PPFA. Black Genocide states that because 78% of PPFA health centers are in minority-dominated communities, it is reducing the overall black population. According to Black Genocide, only 12% of our population is black and 35% of the abortions in America are black babies.[19] These two organizations are clearly concerned about the long-term thinning out of and impact on the black population that abortion causes.

On Friday May 4, 2012 Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law a bill that would cut Planned Parenthood’s access to taxpayer funds for non-abortion services. Arizona currently does not provide tax dollars for abortion, but supporters of the law want to make sure that money is not given indirectly to Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood Arizona says this law will interrupt services for nearly 20,000 women.[20] PPFA putting the focus on women not receiving services is deflecting the real issue, which is that Arizona’s citizens do not want their tax dollars going to a program that violates their values.

Governor Brewer stated, “By signing this measure into law, I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion.”[21] Clearly the people of Arizona do not want their tax dollars going to PPFA. Their voice echoes many Americans who stand in strong opposition to the spending of their tax dollars on abortions.

THE ECONOMICS

Let’s take a look at how much PPFA costs the taxpayer. Planned Parenthood’s fiscal budget for 2009-2010 was nearly $1.048 billion with almost 46% coming from taxpayers.[22] President Obama’s 2011 budget provided $327 million to PPFA’s family planning program. That is an increase of $9.86 million from 2010. His 2011 budget provided an additional $133.6 million for sex education and medically accurate teen pregnancy prevention programs, an increase of $19.2 million from 2010.[23]

Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization receiving funding from the Federal Government and private donations. Yet according to The American Spectator journalist David Bass it is a very profitable nonprofit. During the 2007-2008 fiscal year Planned Parenthood had excess revenue of $85 million and an operating budget of over $1 billion. Bass goes on to say that issues such as oil company profits and CEO bonuses pale in comparison to the revenue of this tax dollar supported agency.[24]

POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS

The House voted in February 2011 to stop funding for Planned Parenthood. When Congress voted to reduce our federal debt by eliminating this expenditure, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards accused Congress members of attacking women’s health, bullying, and making access to women’s health a political strategy.[25] This echoes the message our President gives in a video released in March 2012. In this video, Obama accuses politicians of wanting to deny women the care they rely on and leaving them to fend for themselves regarding their health. He praises Planned Parenthood, which happens to be a prime endorser of his presidential campaign, and refers to having to stand up against politicians who want to deny millions of women health care.[26]

WHAT SHALL WE DO?

Our Federal debt is over $15 trillion,[27] and we continue to have substantial yearly deficits. In 2011, the deficit was $1.3 trillion.[28] Spending close to $500 million a year of taxpayer dollars on Planned Parenthood to promote sexual promiscuity and abortions, and to fund “free contraception” and safe sex mapping is morally and ethically reprehensible, and allows people to avoid personal responsibility. Beyond that it is financially irresponsible.

In the 2012 election, it is vital that we restore fiscal stability for our nation. Borrowing money from China to cover our debt while we fund controversial programs like Planned Parenthood is unsustainable and must be eliminated. For this to happen we must elect Senators, Congressmen, and a President who will take an axe to Federal spending and scrutinize how our tax dollars are being used.

As individuals, we must vet our candidates thoroughly and determine whether they will significantly reduce Federal spending. Educate yourself on the cultural and economic issues at hand. Teach your neighbors and friends what you are learning. Urge them to get to the polls in November.
